The Oh Yeah Open Day? What was that?

Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol, James Nesbitt, Duke Special and a host of others took part in the launch of the Oh Yeah music centre on Saturday, May 5..

There was an open day, with stalls and exhibitions followed by a surprise party with live music from Gary Lightbody, Duke Special, Elbow, Jetplane Landing, James Walsh from Starsailor, Burning Codes and The Fools.

Actor James Nesbitt acted as compere for part of the night, praising the Oh Yeah project and called Belfast "the most exciting city in the world right now".

Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol performed with Lisa Hannigan, formerly a member of the Damien Rice band. This was Lisa's first appearance since leaving Rice. They sang 'Set The Fire To The Third Bar' and 'Some Surprise', a duet that first appeared on an Oxfam charity album, 'Cake Sale' last year. Gary also sang 'Teenage Kicks' with Guy Garvey from Elbow and played an acoustic version of 'Run' plus an unnamed song that was written especially for the day.

Peter Wilson from Duke Special finished the night with an astounding version of the Ash song, 'Oh Yeah', which prompted a huge audience sing-a-long.

James Walsh from Starsailor played a version of the Van Morrison song 'Wild Night', plus his own 'Four To The Floor' and a snatch of The Gorillaz' 'Dare'. He also previewed a new Starsailor song.

Elbow flew in especially for from Manchester and singer Guy Garvey was expansive in his praise for the atmosphere on the night. He took the opportunity to interview Gary Lightbody for his BBC Radio 6 programme.

Burning Codes is a new project fronted by Paul Archer of the Ghears. He sang backing vocals on the last Snow Patrol album, 'Eyes Open'.

Writer Glenn Patterson and singer Andy White were also at the launch. Across the day, an estimated 600 people got the chance to see the Oh Yeah project in its raw state, before the renovation work starts.

Oh Yeah's Stuart Bailie says, "It was an astonishing night. So many unique musical moments and jaw-dropping performances. It was the first time that Gary has sung in public with Lisa. It was an honour to have Elbow over for the night, and Duke Special broke us up with 'Oh Yeah'. We were aiming to get a feeling of community with the night and it happened almost immediately. We've been talking about this project for almost a year and a half so to actually hear great music in the building was the supreme proof."
